Techniques to improve your sketching

Thumbnail Sketches or small Notans are an important part of the creative process. Create small, quick sketches to plan your composition and explore different perspectives. 

I'm sharing five techniques to improve your sketching as a starting point, but there are many other ways to approach sketching. 

Creating small sketches allows you to experiment with various layouts and ideas before committing to a larger piece. Most importantly, this habit will improve your overall skill level and carry over into your paintings.

5 Techniques To Improve Your Sketching

Improving your sketching skills involves practicing various techniques and experimenting with different approaches. Here are five techniques to improve your sketching or help you get started: Incorporating these techniques into your practice routine will help you develop and refine your creative voice or sketching style.

Use a Proportional Scale when preparing and planning. (Watch the video below to learn more about using this tool.)
Use an App or program to study values: I suggest Notanizer from the Play Store.
Begin with large shapes, minimal detail.
Stay with gray scale to start, no color.
If you are unsure, start with a pencil drawing and follow up with markers.

The Sketching Partner - A Handy Tote

You're probably saying, "I don't have anywhere to sketch." All you need is a very small place such as the kitchen counter, table or even a small desk or table by your couch or bed.

If you have space to add a piece of furniture, this is one of my favorite places to go create. This table is very functional and very reasonably priced.

Making your space inviting helps stimulate your creativity. If no space is available, look over my sketching tote above. There is really no reason not to sketch, JUST DO IT!! MOVE! This is the answer to improve your sketching skills!!
